Is There a Standard Garage Door Size and What Is It?

Have you ever thought about garage door size? If you're putting in a new garage or planning to update the door on a garage you already have, you might have questions. It probably seems that the easiest way to get the project done is by choosing a standard garage door.

There's only one problem. Standard garage doors do not exist.

Unexpected? Don't worry. That doesn't mean you're out of luck. While a single standard door size isn't realistic, you'll find that some dimensions are easier to access than others. What you can't do is walk into a store and ask for a standard garage door since there isn't one garage door that is considered standard by everyone.

In your mind, what does the standard door look like? No windows or several? Black? White? Blue? Everyone thinks of something different when it comes to a standard garage door, which is precisely why they do not exist. Garage doors come in an array of sizes, colors, and styles, so the standard for you might not be the standard for someone else.

There are so many choices that anyone can find a door they love. Of course, it might be easier if only a few options were out there, but that's not the case.

Since garage doors need to suit every taste, you can customize them from top to bottom in size, style, and color. However, this can get a little overwhelming for some people. This guide will walk through all the steps to choose the right garage door for your home.

While there is no one standard size, some are more common than others and could be considered a set of standard sizes. For instance:

The most commonly seen heights are 7' and 8'. For width, 8', 9', 10', 12', 14', and 16' are widespread.

Keep these sizes in mind as an idea of your options when selecting a garage door.

What to think about before purchasing a new garage door

Do you have an idea of how you will choose the size of the new door? For example, are you building a new garage that needs a door or replacing one for an existing space?

If you already own a garage that needs a new door, there are tools available to calculate the best size. One of the most important things to know is the space available in your garage to install the tracks to lift the door, which are also called just lifts. This is what lets the door open. There are different types of lifts, and you can choose a suitable variety by considering the space you have and your specific needs.

Are you building a new garage instead? Think about how the garage is going to be used before choosing a size.

The width of the door comes down to how the garage will be used.

Here are some ways to use a garage

Once you know what you're using the garage for, you'll have the insight you need to choose the size of the door. Will it be holding a single car? Two of them? An RV or a motorcycle?

For those who want to store a single car, the door can range from seven to 10 feet wide. Eight feet will give you a bit of space, while nine or 10 will ensure you have lots of room around the vehicle.

Do you have a van, pickup, or SUV instead? For a larger vehicle, consider a nine-to-10-foot door. Keep in mind that doors can be made in various sizes, all the way from a small four-foot door to a massive 20-foot door.

A tool to help you choose the best garage door size depending on the size of the vehicles you own.

When choosing a garage door, its size will depend on how large the garage is in some cases. However, this isn't always true. Two garages that are the same size might use different sizes of doors, while two garages that aren't the same size could have the same door. It comes down to what a customer wants.

A single door will be between seven and 12 feet wide. Double doors can range from 14 to 20 feet in width.

Need two cars to be inside the garage? Consider a 16' door, which will give you lots of room to park both vehicles. While a 14' door can do the job, the cars will end up very close to each other. Parking at an angle may be required for both cars to enter.

Have someone young or new to driving using the garage who might scrape up against the frame? Our doors can be up to 20 feet wide.

As you see, a single nine-foot-wide door isn't going to be large enough for parking two cars. However, you can decide whether to choose a single 16' door or two 8' doors.

Both options will have pros and cons. For instance, if you have a single door that refuses to open, the exit will be blocked. So, choosing a 16' door might leave you stuck at home until you can find a way to open the garage door. But those who have two smaller doors can use the one that is functioning to leave the garage.

When it comes to cost, two single doors or a double door are similar. However, door openers can change the price to some extent. Since two openers are needed for two doors, the price may be slightly higher than with a single door.

Building something smaller like a shed in the garden? You will find smaller garage doors. For instance, a four to six-foot door will be reasonable for storing lawn and garden equipment.

Why install a LiftMaster garage door opener for the garage

As the door gets heavier and larger, the more effort it takes to lift it if it comes out of proper balance. You can make things simpler for yourself by hiring a specialist to install an electric door opener and handle any of your needed maintenance.

LiftMaster has many models to choose from. One is the model 87504-267, which has a Wi-Fi connection and lets you monitor and control the door from anywhere you happen to be. These door openers are also helpful to keep out burglars. In addition, if there is a forced door opening, the opener will push in the other direction to keep the person out.

The Design of the garage door

Most garage doors are cut to the nearest inch to give you as much space as possible. Weatherstripping can fill in the gap and prevent you from letting in lousy weather, outdoor air, or pests.

What's even more exciting is that we offer custom doors, so there is no extra charge for getting whatever dimensions work for your needs.

However, not all designs fit into each space. For example, you might see two doors with the same design and different sizes where the space between the side of the door and the pattern doesn't match up the same. This can create an unfinished look if there's too much space or the pattern is very close to the edge.

When you want to be sure the design looks great on the door you want, test it out on various models using our Design Centre! It's available entirely for free.
